Former Liverpool FC striker Daniel Sturridge has faced a ban from football until June 2020 after he was found guilty of violating the gambling rules of the Football Association (FA). He has also been imposed a £150,000 fine for his transgressions.
Back in July 2019, Daniel Sturridge was banned from football for a fortnight, following a regulatory commission revealed that he had provided his brother with “inside information” regarding his possible to transfer to Sevilla that was used in a bet. He further faced a £75,000.
In a new statement, the FA revealed that the professional footballer and former striker of Liverpool FC was now banned from football and all football-related activity until June 17th, 2020. As confirmed by FIFA, the ban would be effective not only in the UK but also worldwide. The measure has come after the Football Association filed an appeal against the original punishment that was imposed on the football player, insisting that it reflected much more tolerance than the violation deserved.
As a result, an independent appeal board has found that the aforementioned regulatory body did not apply the FA’s rules properly. It also found proven two other charges that were dismissed at first. Consequently, the ban faced by the football player had been increased from two weeks to four months. The monetary fine imposed on Sturridge has also been doubled to a total of £150,000.
Sturridge’s Contract with Turkish Trabzonspor Terminated on Mutual Agreement
Apart from the announcement of the ban, the beginning of the week also saw the contract made between the 30-year-old football player and Trabzonspor to be mutually terminated. Following his release from Liverpool FC, Sturridge joined the Turkish side in the summer of 2019 on a three-year contract, and has so far made 13 appearances for the club, in which he has scored 7 goals.
In a video that was uploaded on the player’s YouTube account, Sturridge described the decision that ended the ongoing season for him as a “disappointing and upsetting”. He further shared an opinion that the practice of placing bets on professional football players moving from one club to another had to be brought to an end.
After the termination of his contract with Trabzonspor was announced, Daniel Sturridge also shared that he was “uncomfortable” continuing to receive payment from the Turkish club at a time when he was not able to “contribute”.
As CasinoGuardian reported, the football player had faced a number of charges alleging him of passing on “inside information” over a potential transfer to Sevilla in January 2018. The ruling of the independent appeal board says that the regulatory commission “misapplied rules” related to the use of such information and made some findings of fact that was unable to be sustained.
